”Just sitting at a desk has never worked for me, I need to be in a workshop and get to work with my hands.”
Every year, the foundation awards scholarships to artists, musicians, actors and other art practitioners who have distinguished themselves through their art and are all connected to Gothenburg. One of the scholarship recipients in 2023 is Olof Marsa.
Reasoning
In the artistic universe of Olof Marsja, history, Sámi craft traditions, the present, and the future meet without any hierarchy. The three-dimensional, sculptural works are often composed of completely different, seemingly irreconcilable materials. Sawed, hewn, or carved details in wood continue into metal, glass, textiles, plastic, gypsum, leather, or reindeer hide. Processed surfaces are joined to found objects or natural discoveries and united in a suggestive and playful assemblage technique where the contradictory and changeable set the imagination in motion.
