Matti Aikio

Matti Aikio (born 1980) is a Sámi visual artist from Finnish side of the Sápmi. He has a background in Sámi reindeer herding culture. He holds an MA in contemporary art from Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art.

Aikio's art has been exhibited in several countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America. He works with mixed media, photography, sound, installations, video, sculpture and text. As an artist, his main interest is to offer the viewer the opportunity to shift perspectives on issues that are often marginalised. Recently, he has focused on themes such as the concept of nature, the representation and image of nature, and how indigenous cultures seem to be pressurised by the contradictory relationship of nation states and capitalism to nature.

Aikio also performs as a dj
