Stories of the constellations have been passed down through generations in both indigenous and other cultures. Humans and animals have used the stars for navigation for thousands of years – and still do today. When the stars are hidden by light pollution, we begin to lose our way.
This picture was taken in the Badlands area in Grasslands National Park, a so-called Dark Sky Preserve and a protected area for one of the largest contiguous natural grasslands in North America. The Badlands landscape features isolated mesas, weathered rock formations, and eroded gullies.
