Seal in our blood

By Maureen Gruben

Sealskin (harp seal), red velvet, thread

Seal In Our Blood relates to the inner and mutual processes that characterise living beings. The work spans more than thirty feet and consists of hand-sewn, intersecting bands of red velvet and sealskin. Its basic form is linear - the line as a fundamental element in both writing and drawing.

Inuvialuit have been as dependent on the seal as the polar bear is; this soft and malleable sculpture evokes the constant circulation of blood in organic bodies and describes how inextricably we depend on other life to maintain this flow.
