In June 2026, experienced Indigenous artists and tradition bearers gathered in Granö for the Arctic Knowledge Bearers and Innovators residency. The aim was to create a space where knowledge, traditions, and artistic experiences could be shared and developed. For many of the participants, this was an unusual opportunity to take part in a residency, which made the week all the more appreciated.
During the week, the artists worked with, among other things, plant dyeing, root carving, grass weaving, beadwork, wood carving, and embroidery. Several chose to try new techniques, and together they also created a joint artwork where each participant contributed their own expression.
The residency also became a meeting place for artists from Västerbotten through a collaboration with Konstfrämjandet. The day provided space for discussions, exchange of experiences, and new contacts that can lead to future collaborations and contribute to a stronger regional art scene.
An important part of the project was the renovation and adaptation of a previously empty furniture workshop in Granö into a studio and workshop. The space became an inspiring workplace during the residency and also provides new opportunities for organising future art and cultural projects.
The residencies also left their mark on the local community. The artists became a natural part of village life, meeting locals and working partly outdoors, which sparked curiosity and led to many spontaneous encounters. The experiences show that a residency not only strengthens the participating artists but also contributes to a vibrant rural area, new collaborations, and a growing interest in art and culture.
